Charles H. Christiansen, EdD, OTR/L (Ret), FAOTA, is Professor Emeritus and former Dean of the School of Health Professions at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and immediate past CEO of the American Occupational Therapy Foundation. Across more than five decades, his scholarship, leadership, and service have helped shape the intellectual foundations of occupational therapy and occupational science, with particular focus on occupation, identity, meaning, lifestyle balance, and well-being.
A recipient of the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship and the American Occupational Therapy Association’s Award of Merit for Outstanding Global Contributions, Dr. Christiansen is recognized among the profession’s most influential contributors. His publications include landmark journal articles, foundational textbooks, and widely cited theoretical work that links everyday occupation to resilience, participation, and human flourishing.
Based in Minnesota, Dr. Christiansen remains active in scholarship, writing, philanthropy, and initiatives advancing ethical, life-relevant health care. In his leisure time, he enjoys poetry, hiking, travel, volunteer work, and time at Bella Vista Farm, a 27-horse equine boarding facility near Byron, Minnesota. He is married to Beth Jones, PhD, a biochemist and equestrian whose intelligence, accomplishment, integrity, and character he deeply admires. He is also the father of three adult children—Carrie, Erik, and Kalle—whose lives reflect those same qualities.
